Tsitsikamma a coastal reserve renowned for its indigenous forests, dramatic coastline and Otter hiking Trail. With its rugged coastline and indigenous forest, Tsitsikamma is the perfect stop for the nature lover.

The word Tsitsikamma means "the place of much water" named by the original inhabitants, the Khoi San. This is a place where the booming breakers of the Indian Ocean relentlessly pound rocky shores, where temperate high forest and fynbos roll down to the sea in an unspoilt verdant carpet and where ancient rivers carve their paths to the ocean down rocky ravines.

Dolphins frolic in the breakers, surfing and playing for the sheer joy of life, and the gentle giant of the ocean, the southern right whale visits here, coming inshore to breed.

The heartland of the park stretches some 5 km to sea, protecting a wonderland of inter- tidal life, reef and deep-sea fish. The primary vegetation biomes consist of Mountain Fynbos, Coastal Fynbos, Afro-montane Forest. Look out for the following animals: Dolphins and porpoises, African Black Oystercatcher, Knysna Loerie, Blue Duiker. It’s also famous for its hundreds of years old Yellowwood Trees.

The area is classified as a temperate rainforest, receiving an average rainfall of less than 975mm per year. The winter months runs from May to September [low season] while the summer runs from October to April [high season]. The summer averages 25C [75.2F] while winter temperatures average 20C [59F]
