WHAT AWAITS YOU IN ADDO NATIONAL PARK?

The park was founded in 1931 to provide a sanctuary for the eleven remaining elephants in the area. The park has proved to be very successful and currently houses more than 800 elephants and a large number of other mammals.

Addo is currently the third largest National Park in South Africa. Over the years the park has expanded to include part of the Eastern Cape coastline and is the only park in South Africa that boasts ‘Africa’s Big 7’ i.e. elephant, rhinoceros, lion, buffalo, leopard, whale and great white shark and all in their natural environment.

GEOLOGY AND WILDLIFE

The park is located in the dense Eastern Cape bush, a malaria free part of the country. Wildlife that can be spotted include: elephants, lions, buffalo, black rhino, spotted hyena and leopard. One unique specie to look out for at Addo is the flightless dung beetle.

WHAT'S THE WEATHER LIKE?

Addo experiences an even distribution of rainfall throughout the year. The winter months runs from May to September [low season] while the summer runs from October to April [high season]. The summer averages 27C [81F] while winter temperatures average 20C [68F].
