WHAT AWAITS YOU IN THE CEDERBERG?

The Cederberg was proclaimed a wilderness area in 1973. It is home to the endemic rare and endangered Clanwilliam Cedar tree. A wilderness area dominated by a craggy mountain range and a nature reserve that stretches from the Middelberg Pass at Citrusdal to just north of the Pakhuis Pass at Clanwilliam - over 70 000 hectares of spectacular, rugged terrain.

Within this area you will find caves and overhangs. San rock art can be found in some of these, evidence of the earliest human inhabitants. If you love hiking then The Cederberg is without doubt one of the most beautiful areas in which to hike. It is also the only area in the world where you can find Rooibos and Buchu growing naturally in the wild.

The predominant vegetation is Mediterranean fynbos in the wetter south and west, changing to semi desert scrub in the north and east. The mountains are noted for dramatic rock formations and San rock art. The area's apex predators are the leopard and caracal. Other mammals include the rock hyrax or "dassie", meerkats and other mongooses, larger antelopes like the bontebok and gemsbok.

The Cederberg has a cool Mediterranean climate with winter rainfall and no coastal influences. But is officially classified a semi-arid region. Depending on what area you stay in, the average rainfall can fluctuate from 200 mm to 1000mm annually. The winter months run from May to September [low season] while the summer runs from October to April [high season]. The summer averages 30C [86F] while winter temperatures average 10 [50F].
