WHAT AWAITS YOU IN GOLDEN GATE HIGHLANDS?

Golden Gate Highlands is home to some of South Africa’s most beautiful sunsets. These sandstone rocks which once provided shelter to the Bushman takes on a a new form with explosions of red, purple and yellow light across the landscape.

The national park is popular with hikers on long treks, but there are also shorter walking trails. Most of the park consists of highland grassland with patches of forest in gorges and ravines, where it is protected from very cold conditions and fire. This is the only grassland national park in South Africa with 60 different species of grasses identified.

While the park might not play host to Africa’s Big Five, mammals which as grey rheboks, blesboks, elands, oribi antelope, Burchell’s zebras, jackals, baboons and numerous bird species, including the rare bearded and Cape vultures and the endangered bald ibis can be found at Golden Gate Highlands.

GEOLOGY AND WILDLIFE

In addition to being the one of the last refuges of Bearded or Cape Vulture, the park is home to a variety of mammals including Burchell's Zebra, Black Wildebeest, Eland, Blesbok, Springbok and the threatened Oribi. Some 140 bird species have also been identified in the park.

WHAT'S THE WEATHER LIKE?

Golden Gate Highlands as its name suggests sits high up. Winters are cold, often snowy. The winter months runs from May to September [low season] while the summer runs from October to April [high season]. The summer averages 22C [72F] while winter temperatures average 17C [63F].
