ABOUT YOUR TRIP

Welcome to Durban. Spend the afternoon on a quick yet immersive tour of the city. Settle into an early night, after all tomorrow you’re heading into the Mountain Kingdom. Journey up the daunting Sani Pass and explore Lesotho over the next two days dropping in at Black Mountain and Semonkong.

On returning from Lesotho, make your way into the Drakensberg where the imposing Amphitheatre awaits as well as the 2nd highest waterfall on the planet — Tugela Falls. Enjoy a hike or two while in the Royal Natal National Park before making your way back to beach via the picturesque Midlands Meander and Karkloof areas. Overnight in Durban before your road trip north into the game reserve.

Travel north to Manyoni Private Game Reserve and spend 3 nights at the experiential Mavela Game Lodge. Track Africa’s iconic Big 5 on twice daily game drives in authentic open safari vehicles with expert rangers. Your final stop in KwaZulu-Natal is Thonga Beach Lodge which is where Leatherback and Loggerhead Turtles lay their eggs and where Southern Right Whales and Humpback Whales stop by. Engage in scuba-diving and snorkelling or a number of water-based activities while staying on this pristine coastline.

After all that nature, some city life will go down nicely. Board a short flight to Cape Town and spend 3 nights in the city centre exploring the culture and history (as well as the foodie spots) on foot and with local guides. Finish your South African exploration with a bicycle tour of Stellenbosch while spending a couple days in the Cape winelands.

FULL ITINERARY

DAY 01 — DURBAN / CITY

 

Welcome to the Zulu Kingdom! Once you arrive at King Shaka Airport, your guide will collect you and transfer you to your city hotel in the leafy Morningside area.

Embark on a half day tour of the city, tasting her flavours and engaging with her culture. Visit an indigenous art museum as well as a local market before tucking into Durban’s famous street food.

DAYS 02 & 03 — SANI PASS & LESOTHO / OVERLAND

 

Bright and early on your first full day in South Africa, we’re leaving the country. This time to Lesotho. Travel up the daunting and breathtaking Sani Pass and travel into Lesotho for the next 2 days. Visit Black Mountain, Semonkong as well as authentic Basotho Villages.

DAY 04 — NORTHERN DRAKENSBERG / MOUNTAINS

 

Return to Underberg and skirt your way along the Drakensberg Mountains to Berghouse & Cottages where you will spend the night. Just around the corner (15km away) takes you to Royal Natal National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Spend the morning exploring the national park which plays host to unforgettable hikes including the Tugela Gorge Walk — the 2nd highest waterfall on Earth.

DAY 05 — MIDLANDS MEANDER / COUNTRYSIDE

 

Travel down the Midlands Meander stopping by the artisan and boutique farms and shops along the way. Visit the world renowned Ardmore Ceramics, taste the delights at Piggly Wiggle and drop in at Howick Falls before spending the night at Rockwood Karkloof. Don’t forget to pop by at the Nelson Mandela Capture site. Home to an eye opening exhibition and art installation.

DAY 06 — DURBAN / CITY

 

Make your way to Durban for an overnight stay before you head deep into northern KwaZulu-Natal’s game reserves. Take a moment to stroll along the beach or tick off jumping off the highest swing on the planet at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Pop us a message for some foodie tips for the city and surrounds if you’d like to treat yourself.

DAYS 07 TO 09 — MANYONI GAME RESERVE / SAFARI

 

Next up is the pristine reserves of KwaZulu-Natal. Board your transfer to Manyoni Private Game Reserve and check into Mavela Game Lodge. This lodge is location on a Big 5 reserve and boasts one of the few glamping safari experiences in the Zulu Kingdom.

Spend the next 3 nights tracking Africa’s iconic wildlife on twice daily game drives in authentic open safari vehicles and bush walks with expert rangers (walking safaris are subject to availability).

DAYS 10 & 11 — MAPUTALAND / OCEAN

 

Continue north along the warm Indian Ocean to Maputaland. Here you will spend 3 nights at Thonga Beach Lodge where you can indulge in scuba diving, snorkelling, turtle safaris (in-season), whale watching (in-season) as well as a range of other water based and land based activities at this sustainable, community-based lodge.

DAYS 12 TO 14 — CAPE TOWN / CITY

 

Board your local flight from Durban to the Mothercity, Cape Town. Hit the ground running once you check in at Derwent House which has a great central location.

Embark on handpicked experiences over the next 3 nights as you explore the Cape Peninsula, hike Cape Town’s iconic mountain, taste the food and take in the culture and history of this diverse city.

DAYS 15 & 16 — WINELANDS / FOOD

 

Head into the Cape Winelands and check into Camissa Farm for 2 nights. The farm overlooks the valley floor to the Simonsberg and Drakenzicht mountains. Enjoy a bicycle tour of Stellenbosch dropping in for wine tastings and foodie experiences throughout the day.

DAY 17 — CAPE TOWN AIRPORT / FLIGHT

 

It’s your final morning in South Africa. Why not drop in at the V&A Waterfront for a spot of shopping before your flight (time permitting) or enjoy a slow morning in the winelands before heading to Cape Town International Airport from where you can continue on your travels.
