ABOUT YOUR TRIP

Kick off your 3 week African conservation expedition with a touch of cultural immersion in the city of gold, Johannesburg. After a taste of the music and foodie scene head straight into the wildernesses of the Zulu Kingdom. Settle into your new bush home for the next two weeks of conservation.

Choose between a number of wildlife conservation projects based in Hluhluwe and Manyoni i.e. African Wild Dog, Cheetah, Rhino, Lion, Elephant, Leopard and Vulture. While at Wildlife Act, you will live and work alongside wildlife experts on projects that talk to the conservation needs of the surrounding reserve. Just remember, This is Zululand, Not Disneyland.

After your volunteering stint, jet off to Cape Town for a bit of socialising, culture, food and R&R. Explore the Cape Peninsula, the iconic Table Mountain and of course the mind swirling winelands. You will also have a chance to visit the SANCCOB project that focuses on seabird rehabilitation i.e. that means penguins!

FULL ITINERARY

DAYS 01 & 02 — JOHANNESBURG / CITY

 

Upon arrival in Johannesburg, you will be met by your friendly driver and transferred to the lovely neighbourhood of Rosebank which is serve as your base for you to settle into your South African adventure.

Spend your afternoon connecting the city’s vibrant culture and jazz scene. Bright and early on your first full day in South Africa venture into the historic and energetic township of Soweto before visiting the Apartheid Museum.

DAYS 03 TO 17 — HLUHLUWE / SAFARI

 

Board your short flight to Durban and make your way to the pristine game reserves of Northern KwaZulu-Natal. Select between Wildlife Act’s Endangered Species Programme or their Rhino Conservation Project and immersive yourself in the world of wildlife conservation for the next 2 weeks.

While volunteering you will have the opportunity to live and work on a game reserve. The Zululand ecosystem is among the most diverse and productive wild lands on the planet. You will be helping with conservation efforts that face tremendous challenges from climate change to poaching.

DAYS 18 & 19 — ISIMANGALISO WETLANDS / OCEAN

 

Time for some R&R along the Indian Ocean at a sustainable community-base lodge known as Gugulesizwe. Spend two nights relaxing on the beach and exploring the coastal forests and maybe even enjoy a spot of snorkelling. In the right seasons, Southern Right Whales make an appearance as well as Leatherback Turtles — after all this is where they lay their eggs.

DAYS 20 TO 23 — CAPE TOWN / CITY

 

Board your flight to the Mothercity, Cape Town. Hit the ground running once you check in at your centrally located and charming hotel. Hit the ground running with an afternoon hike up Table Mountain to catch the sunset.

Spend the 4 nights immersing in the culture, history and unique biodiversity of Cape Town. Join an immersive Peninsula tour including a visit to the SANCCOB seabird conservation project before connecting with the culture and history while indulging in a foodie tour of Cape Town. Of course no visit is complete without a boozy trip into the winelands of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch.

DAY 24 — CAPE TOWN AIRPORT / FLIGHT

 

It’s your final morning in South Africa. Why not drop in at the V&A Waterfront for a spot of shopping before your flight (time permitting) or enjoy a slow morning in the winelands before heading to Cape Town International Airport from where you can continue on your travels.
